Acupuncture benefits Alzheimer’s disease patients. Clinical research published in the Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science finds acupuncture plus moxibustion effective in improving cognitive function and improving the general quality of life for Alzheimer’s disease patients. The research, supported by the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, measured an 83.3% total effective rate of acupuncture combined with moxibustion. Scalp points for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease are in the study.

The acupuncture points used were GV20 (Baihui) and Sishencong (Ex-Hn-1). Filiform acupuncture needles (0.30 mm x 40-50 mm) were inserted at a 30 degree angle to the area just below the galea aponeurotica. Twirling method was applied without lifting and thrusting at a rate of 200 times per minute for 2-3 minutes followed by a needle retention time of 5 minutes prior to repeating the process. Engagement by family members involved instruction to verbally communicate and help the patient move their limbs during the needling regime.

Secondo i principi TCM, il deqi (l'ago viene "afferrato" dai tessuti in cui è inserito" è un'indicazione dell'efficacia dell'agopuntura. Il team di ricerca ha garantito che il deqi è stato raggiunto nella maggior parte dei punti di agopuntura. Un altro studio sull'insonnia ha dato conclusioni simili. I ricercatori hanno confrontato l'agopuntura più erbe con assunzione di estazolam. L'agopuntura più erbe ha dimostrato risultati significativamente rispetto al farmaco. Inoltre, l'estazolam ha prodotto effetti avversi anche gravi, tra cui mal di testa, affaticamento, secchezza della bocca e vertigini. L'agopuntura non ha prodotto effetti negativi gravi.

La fitoterapia usata nello studio era la formula classica a base di erbe Shen Zao An Shen Tang. I punti di agopuntura utilizzati nello studio sono stati:

Il 54,8%
dei pazienti trattati agopuntura più erbe ha recuperato le funzioni del sonno e un altro 35,5% ha mostrato miglioramenti significativi. Il gruppo estazolam ha avuto un tasso di recupero del 32,3% e un altro 22,5% ha mostrato miglioramenti significativi. Il tasso di fallimento dell'agopuntura più erbe gruppo era del 3,2% e il tasso di fallimento del gruppo estazolam del 25,8%. Questo studio era simile allo studio descritto prima quanto alla scelta dei punti di agopuntura. Entrambe le inchieste utilizzavano i seguenti punti comuni di agopuntura:
